Film review was one of the first film magazines introduced.
Conventional it features stars of movies on the front to attract not just genre fans but fans of the particular actor. It uses direct address.
Since then magazine development for film has much developed.
Empire Magazine:
Claims to be the world's most influential film magazine.
Its readership is three quarters male and aged between 18-40, in a relationship, university educated and time-poor. Because I intend for my audience, since being mid-market, I expect my audience to have some sort of full time education and thus to be time poor. This is why my magazine should have quick and snappy articles that capture one's temporary attention.
Empire’s audience is passionate about film — they use cinema as escapism or insight into other worlds.
Because of this, Empire magazine would relate to my magazine.
The explorer audiences are not just seeking wild adventures
and escapism, but being media literate would like the Empire audience
be interested in exploring new contemporary movies.
Empire also hosts podcasts, which is interesting because that is yet another form of interaction and convergence with their audience. Podcast on my website will thus be advertised.
Magazines such as PhotoPlay, though they do change the colour scheme according to the featured film, they seem to have a very distinctive design, layout, and fashion, distinctive to their brand.
Film magazines today unlike PhotoPlay adapt their design to the style of each individual film, though they tend to have a recognisable font that establishes their brand.
